Building in existing structures: Sustainable living ideas in Loft M at the Rheinauhafen in Cologne
How can existing buildings be adapted to meet modern requirements while preserving their original character? In the “Loft M” project, a converted warehouse at Rheinauhafen in Cologne, successfully addresses this challenge with a sustainable design approach HEWI System 162 lever handles in matt black were used in the renovation and demonstrate how well-thought-out details can enhance the overall harmony of the space. You can find out more about building in existing structures as well as the exciting renovation project in this article.
What makes building redevelopment special?
Building in existing structures involves adapting and repurposing existing buildings without expanding into new areas or using additional resources for new construction. Instead, existing structures are modernized or redesigned to meet current needs such as energy efficiency, accessibility, or changing usage. This approach is both ecologically sound and economically advantageous because it extends the service life of buildings and increases their value. Working with existing buildings also presents unique challenges for planners and architects: From carefully analyzing the building fabric and materials to creatively integrating new design elements, many factors must be harmonized. Planners and architects often face the challenge of preserving historical elements such as facades and structural features while seamlessly integrating modern technologies such as energy-efficient systems and accessibility.
Loft M: A warehouse building becomes a modern living space
“Loft M” at Rheinauhafen in Cologne exemplifies how building in existing structures can blend historical architecture with modern living standards. Originally a storage building, it was extensively renovated to meet the needs of a young family. The design concept emphasizes sustainability and preserves the original character of the building.
The three-story residential unit was divided up so that the private rooms are located on the entrance level. Here, natural materials such as olive-colored clay plaster and regional woods characterize the appearance. A cream-colored rubber floor is reminiscent of the seamless floors of old industrial buildings yet creates a harmonious connection between clay plaster and wood. The second level – the central living area – is accessed via a striking staircase painted in glossy orange. There, a dining area with a fabric-covered bench and light blue table creates an inviting, communicative atmosphere. The living space itself opens up into a two-story room with large windows that let in plenty of natural light and offer an unobstructed view of the Rhine. Varying platform heights create a dynamic sense of space by subtly separating different living areas.
HEWI lever handles System 162 in matt black were chosen for the doors and fit seamlessly into the design concept of the loft. The clear, minimalist design of the lever handle highlights the modern character of the conversion and complements the industrial aesthetics of the original warehouse. The matt black surface creates a deliberate contrast to the natural materials such as clay plaster and wood and ties in with the striking accents – such as the orange-painted staircase. These details illustrate how well-thought-out design solutions can contribute to harmony between old and new.
Building in existing structures: A future-oriented approach
Renovating and modernizing existing buildings not only addresses challenges like climate change and resource scarcity but also represents a forward-thinking investment in the future. By preserving and sustainably developing buildings, cities can create a balance between history and progress. Working with existing buildings offers architects and planners the opportunity to develop creative solutions for complex requirements and contribute to conserving resources and reducing emissions. Projects such as the “Loft M” demonstrate how a symbiosis of functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability can be achieved through careful planning and the use of innovative products.
